Chion vs BI tools — an AI SQL workforce, not another dashboard layer.

Tableau AI, Power BI Copilot, and Looker all added conversational layers on top of dashboards. Chion is the opposite: a verified SQL agent built conversational first against live PostgreSQL, with SQL under every answer, per-team pricing instead of per-seat, and a portable SQL skill library that exports to Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex. None of these BI vendors offer that capability.

Problem. BI dashboards depend on ETL pipelines that go stale, miss new questions, and cost engineering hours to maintain. What Chion does. Connects read-only to the source-of-truth PostgreSQL. No ETL, no parallel warehouse, no dashboard to break overnight.

Competitor pricing at public rates (Tableau Creator + 4 Viewers, Power BI Pro x5). Looker pricing not publicly listed. The "Pricing model" and "Skill library format" rows reflect Chion's architectural differentiation: an AI SQL workforce is priced per team and ships a portable SQL skill library; AI copilots are priced per seat and ship vendor-locked modeling languages.

Methodology

How these comparisons were built.

Pricing is at public rates as of writing (Tableau Creator + 4 Viewers, Power BI Pro x5). Looker pricing is not publicly listed and is shown as quote-based. Feature cells reflect what each competitor documents in their public product pages. The SQL skill library row reflects Chion's CHION.md export. BI vendors focus on dashboard widgets, not portable SQL skills for IDE agents.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the comparison.

Is Chion a SQL copilot or a SQL workforce?
A workforce. Chion ships a team of verified SQL agents (one per persona: finance, ops, growth) priced per team and packaged with a portable SQL skill library. Power BI Copilot, Tableau AI, and Looker AI are copilots: per-seat AI overlays on top of dashboards. The architectural difference is that a workforce compounds (every verified query becomes a reusable skill in the library); a copilot regenerates SQL each turn.
How does Chion's SQL skill library differ from Looker's LookML?
LookML is Looker's proprietary modeling language; queries written against it only run inside Looker. Chion's SQL skill library is plain Markdown (CHION.md / SKILL.md) wrapping standard PostgreSQL SQL, portable to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or back into Looker itself. Same modeling intent, different lock-in profile: your verified queries become a portable asset, not a vendor-rented one.
Does Chion replace BI dashboards entirely?
For ad hoc questions and weekly metric checks, yes. For pixel-perfect executive dashboards with curated layouts, BI tools remain category-leading. Most teams run both.
Why does "no ETL" matter?
Every ETL pipeline is a stale data risk and a maintenance cost. Chion queries your live PostgreSQL directly, read-only: nothing to break overnight, nothing to refresh, nothing to debug when a column gets renamed.
Per-team vs per-seat: what is the difference?
BI vendors price per user license. Chion prices per workspace. A 50-person team on Chion pays the same as a 5-person team in the same tier; the question budget scales with usage, not headcount.
